Surveyor conducting a measured survey with equipment on site, part of Architect Your Home’s process to prepare accurate project plans

Step 02 Plan

Measured Survey & Planning the Journey

Have some ideas – what next?

After your Vision Sketch Sprint sparks big ideas, it’s natural to ask: What now? How do we turn this into a real, actionable project? Many homeowners at this stage feel unsure about next steps, timelines, or what’s required – and that’s exactly where we guide you forward.

We start with a measured survey, giving the design team the accurate, detailed information they need to ground every decision in the real conditions of your home. With that foundation in place, we help you map out the journey ahead – from statutory approvals and detailed design to builder selection and preparation – so you know what’s coming, what to expect, and how to budget wisely.

This stage isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about replacing guesswork with clarity. We help you put a thoughtful, structured plan in place, so you can move ahead with confidence, knowing you’re prepared for each step on the way to your transformed home.

Step 02

MEASURED SURVEY & PLANNING THE JOURNEY

A measured survey is more than just a technical exercise – it’s the critical foundation for everything that comes next. Without accurate, detailed knowledge of your home’s existing conditions, even the best design ideas can hit hidden snags.

Many homeowners don’t realise how much can shift or go wrong if early assumptions are off:

  • Walls that aren’t straight

  • Floors that aren’t level

  • Spaces that are slightly smaller (or larger) than they appear

  • Structural elements hidden behind finishes

A precise measured survey helps reveal these realities upfront, reducing the risk of surprises later. It allows your architect to make informed, confident decisions – and it gives you the peace of mind that the project is built on solid, reliable information.

But it’s not just about the technical side. This stage also helps map the entire journey ahead: identifying what permissions are needed, outlining the sequence of steps, setting realistic timelines, and helping you plan your budget wisely.

In short: it’s the step that takes you from excited ideas to a clear, practical, achievable roadmap – ensuring you’re fully prepared for a smooth, successful renovation journey. It is not a step that should be skimped or under estimated.

B1 – FULL MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY

Full house detail

A professional surveyor will take precise measurements of your entire home to produce a set of computer-generated two- or three-dimensional plans, elevations, and sections showing your current layout.

B2 – PART MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY

Measured survey for affected areas

For smaller projects that don’t require full planning permission, it may only be necessary to measure part of your home. Your architect will advise you on what’s needed for your specific project.

B3 – INPUT TO CAD

Translation of the Sprint Survey

For simpler projects, accurate computer-generated drawings can be produced from the measurements and photographs taken during your Vision Sketch Sprint by your Architect.

B4 – MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY BY ARCHITECT

Architect returns to take detailed survey

In some cases, your architect may personally take precise measurements of your home and produce two- or three-dimensional plans, elevations, and sections to show the current layout.
